In thinking of a way to preserve some of the history of the Falls and surrounding area, I have decided to take on the task of searching some history and events in the area inhopes that visitors to this blog will find it interesting. Don’t hesitate to post your questions, comments and input, whether you are local or live half way around the world, I would love to hear from you.

We’ll start this off by answering two common questions that are asked about Niagara Falls. The first being:

Where did the word NIAGARA come from?

“Niagara” is derived from the Iroquois Indian word “Onguiaahra” which translates to “The Strait”.

Did the Falls ever stop running?

Yes. On March 29 1848 the water flowing over both the American Falls and the Canadian falls had completely stopped for several hours due to an Ice Jam in the upper Niagara River. People had actually walked out into the river bed and recovered artifacts.

In 1969, a dam was built to stop the flow of water over the American Falls. The purpose was to determine how feasible it was to clear away the large boulders from the base of the falls to improve the appearance. After several months they decided that the expense would be to great and they had removed the dam and restore the flow of water.

<img width="'1'" height="'1'" src="'http://res1.blogblog.com/tracker/7188377235403896847-7705813417330268548?l=niagaraadventures.blogspot.com'/
